Assaults and Family Offenses

The law treats persons accused of crimes committed against family members more severely than crimes against a non-family member. Usually during the proceeding a protective order is issued preventing the accused from having contact with the victim family member. If children were in any way involved child protective services, or CPS, will be called in to do their own investigation. Often the case is referred to family court as well, creating a parallel action to the criminal matter that can often times be more severe.
