303 men from Liberty fought in the Revolutionary War. At that time Liberty was so large that it included the Towns of Callicoon and Fremont. The Town today covers 85 square miles. When the European settlers came to Liberty they settled to the Northwest Liberty Village at Revonah Lake. As land was cleared Liberty, NY went through various stages of development. One of the earlier industries was the tanneries business, which ran through the Civil War. This was followed by dairy farming, and after that became a summer destination which lead to the opening of hotels and resorts. Liberty, NY in became dependant upon the tourist and the summer season. As the years went by settlements began to develop which eventually became the Town and Village of Liberty, NY. The Village of Liberty incorporated on September 17, 1870, and is the largest of the Town's communities, located at the crossroads of the Quickway (Route 17) and State Highway Route 52.
